Apartments in the historical town of Valencia
Summary. In this emblematic place you’ll find as well as the artistic and architectonic values, the most curious old shops in its little streets and squares, lots of restaurants and cutting edges cafés with traditional home made chocolate drink.
There is a roman, moorish, visigothic and medieval Valencia reflected in its public monuments at downtown. The city arose in the present Cathedral area and was growing in concentric rings around it, surrounded by a long wall with its huge entrance gates.
Today only two remain: Las Torres de Quart from theXV century, an impressive fortificated gate that still has the cannon shots from the Independence Spanish war,and Las Torres de Serrano, facing north, gothic and surrounded by a moat
In downtown you shouldn’t miss these monuments:
La Catedral (The Cathedral) with its famous Puerta de los Apóstoles(Apostle Gate) where each Thursday the old “Tribunal de las Aguas” gathers to regulate the use of the watering system in valencian orchard. There’s no documents, no papers. Only the word is needed.
El Miguelete Tower. The bell tower most emblematic in town, next to the Cathedral. It is 60m.high and its tower is hexagonal and baroc. From upstairs you’ll enjoy the historical town’s magnificient sight
El Mercado Central (The Central Market) a good example of civil building from 1928.It is considered as one of the best in Europe, with huge glass covered domes. You’ll find there the freshest produces, high quality fish and meat and all sort of food items
La Lonja. Next to the Central Market, la Lonja is the gothic architecture highest point in the city, with its very long helicoidal columns and domed roofs. It was the first valencian commercial bank and it is a UNESCO World Heritage place
La Plaza Redonda (The round square) is an old completely round square with little stalls where one can find the most varied things and curiosities, like a kind of flea market. It’s been restorated nowadays and it offers the best on Sunday mornings. The tiny streets surrounding the square are vividly lived and artisan and antique shops are in every corner.
La Plaza de la Virgen .with the Basilica devoted to the Virgen de los Desamparados is a public pedestrian square where those who enters the church to pray mix with the ones who play music or make performances, tourists and passers-by. The place where to gather before going to dinner or have a drink towards el Carmen, the coolest district.
